1. Từ vựng về chủ đề Work

To be called for an interview: to be invited to attend an interview (được mời đến một cuộc phỏng vấn)

Example: Although he has been called for an interview, he hasn’t got a job yet.

To be your own boss/run your own business/be self-employed: to have your own business (điều hành doanh nghiệp của riêng mình)

Example: It has been my dream is to be my own boss, because I can do everything in my way If I run my own business.

A nine-to-five job: a normal job that consists of an 8 hour a day (Công việc bình thường làm 8 tiếng/ngày)

Example: The idea of doing a nine-to-five job is quite arduous for few people.

To be stuck behind a desk: to be unhappy in office job (không hạnh phúc đối với công việc văn phòng)

Example: Working full-time in an office can lead to being stuck behind a desk.

Job satisfaction: the feeling of enjoying a job (Mức độ hài lòng đối với công việc)

Example: Job satisfaction is the most important factor when a person chooses a job.

Voluntary work: to work without pay (Công việc tình nguyện)

Example: In my free time, I join in voluntary work to help the society.

To be well paid: to earn a good salary (Mức lương cao)

Example: Working in an auditing area will be well paid.

Working conditions: the hours, salary and other entitlements that comes with the job (Điều kiện công việc)

Example: Employers should spend more money on improving the working conditions.

To meet a deadline: to finish a job on time (Làm đúng deadline)

Example: Last week she was really stress, because she had to work too hard to meet the deadlines.

To take early retirement: to retire early (nghỉ hưu sớm)

Example: Recently, a large number of older worker tend to take early retirement, then they will have more time to travel.

A heavy workload: to have a lot of work to do (rất nhiều công việc phải làm)

Example: Many workers are complaining about the heavy workload, and they asking for higher salary.

Land a new job: get a new (and usually a good) job (nhận được một công việc mới tốt hơn)

Example: After graduating, I did the usual things of putting together my CV & applying for jobs. Luckily, I landed a fantastic new job at a tourism company.

Living wage: enough money to live on (mức lương đủ sống)

Example: After doing a job swap, I just got a living wage which wasn’t commensurate with my experience & abiity.

Do a job-share: situation where 2 people share equal parts of the same job (Chia sẻ công việc)

Example: I decided to go part-time and do a job-share with my friend after returning from maternity leave.

Lay off staff: dismiss staff because there is no work for them to do (sa thải nhân viên)

Example: My start-up went through a difficult period and had to lay off staff.

Make a living/make ends meet: kiếm sống

Example: I had a substantial volume of work – private students and marking exams – and was able to make a living.

Move up the ladder: being promoted (được thăng chức)

Example: I was put on a fast-track scheme and was moving up the ladder fast

Get the sack: be dismissed (bị sa thải)

Example: I want to take one week off from work but I’m afraid of getting the sack

2. Từ vựng về chủ đề Study

Bachelor’s degree: an undergraduate course which usually lasts 3 or 4 years. (Bằng cử nhân)

Exmple: I will receive my bachelor’s degree in two years.

Distance learning (e-learning): education that takes place remotely, usually via the Internet. (Giáo dục từ xa)

Example: Distance learning is more flexible than traditional education, because students don’t have to attend classes and can schedule their timetables as they want.

Eager beaver: an enthusiastic and hard-working person. (người nhiệt tình chăm chỉ)

Example: My friend is an eager beaver. He studies everything with pleasure and gets great marks.

Face-to-face classes: a traditional way of studying – in a classroom with a teacher. (Các lớp học trực tiếp)

Example: When I was a kid, face-to-face classes had no alternatives, but nowadays a myriad of educational establishments offer online courses and individual tuition.

Higher education: education that is followed after high school. (Giáo dục đại học)

Example: I plan on getting higher education after finishing school.

Hit the books: begin studying hard. (học hành chăm chỉ)

Example: I’m on my third year in the university; it is time to finally hit the books.

Internship: a temporary position which students usually take to get work experience and practical knowledge. (Thực tập sinh)

Example: Before I went into design industry, I took an internship in a company.

Master’s degree: a graduate course, which follows after bachelor’s degree. (Bằng thạc sĩ)

Example: Master’s degree is often important to find a job with a higher salary.

Mature student: someone who’s older than others. (Học sinh lớn tuổi những vẫn tiếp tục tham gia các lớp học)

Example: Nowadays it’s not uncommon to face a mature student in the class. People often change professions and get a second or third degree in their mid-thirties.

To fall behind with studies: to progress less quickly than others. (tụt lại so với các bạn học khác)

Example: Mary was ill for two weeks, so she fell behind with her studies.

To learn something by heart: to memorize something. (học thuộc lòng)

Example: Last year I had to learn a very big poem by heart for my literature class.

To meet a deadline: to finish something within a time limit. (hoàn thành dealine đúng hạn)

Example: Unfortunately, we weren’t able to meet the deadline for our project.

To pass with flying colours: to pass easily and with excellent result. (thi được điểm cao một cách dễ dàng)

Example: I’m studying hard and I will pass IELTS with flying colours.

To play truant: to skip classes without permission. (trốn học)

Example: During my school years I often played truant with my friends.

To pursue studying: to continue studying. (tiếp tục theo đuổi việc học)

Example: Lora would like to pursue studying in the future to become a professor.

To sit an exam: to take an exam. (làm bài kiểm tra)

Example: Tomorrow I’ll have to sit a two-hour math exam.

To take a year out: to spend one year working or traveling before studying in the University. (sử dụng một năm làm việc hoặc du lịch trước khi vào đại học)

Example: My friend took a year out and went traveling to the UK.

Tuition fees: money you pay for your education. (học phí)

Example: I had to pay tuition fees this summer.

Concentrate on something: Tập trung vào điều gì đó

Example: You need to concentrate on the fundamentals in order to understand the subject.

Revise your notes: Xem lại ghi chép

Example: I should revise the notes before my test.

Overcome the difficulty of something: Vượt qua khó khăn của điều gì đó

Example:I overcame the difficulty of doing Maths and got a degree.

Conduct a research: Tiến hành một thí nghiệm.

Example: In order to test our theory, we conducted a small research.

Study for an exam: Ôn thi

Example: She is studying for her exams. We shouldn’t bother her.

Cram for an exam/a test: Ôn thi (kiểu nhồi nhét)

Example: I didn’t study ‘til the very last day. So I had to cram for the test.

Pass/Fail an exam/test: Qua/Tạch

Example: Passing or failing a test is solely based on your commitment.

Express somebody belief that + clause: Bày tỏ niềm tin về điều gì

Example: He expresses his belief that the teacher should focus more on the basics.

Be in the belief that + clause: Ai đó tin rằng điều gì đó

Example: I am in the belief that we will beat this pandemic.

Boast about something: Khoe khoang về điều gì đó

Example: He always boasts about his ability to read fast.

Succeed in (doing) something: Thành công trong việc gì đó.

Example: We succeeded in collecting enough information.
